As someone who spends a fair amount of time reading medical literature and navigating the labyrinth that is modern healthcare, I know how rare it is to find a surgeon who seamlessly balances clinical brilliance with genuine human warmth. Dr. William Sheppard is that rare exception. Before my laminectomy, my quality of life was severely restricted. I was in persistent, nagging spinal pain, and walking for more than ten minutes felt less like exercise and more like a punishment. Anyone who has dealt with spinal nerve compression knows the mental toll it takes when your world shrinks down to a ten-minute radius. From our first consultation, Dr. Sheppard took a masterclass approach to patient communication. He walked me through the imaging, explained the mechanics of the decompressive procedure, and patiently answered my questions. Then he answered them again. And again. (I’m fairly certain I asked for the same post-operative timeline a zillion times, yet he treated my millionth question with the exact same grace and thoroughness as the first.) He never rushed, never condescended, and made sure I felt entirely confident in the plan. The surgical outcome speaks for itself. I was up and walking the day after surgery—a moment that felt like a minor miracle, even if my initial gait was less "graceful swan" and more "cautiously reanimated statue." Now, nine months post-op, I am completely back to my baseline. I can do everything I did before the pain set in, completely unburdened. A special word must be said for the entire UCLA care ecosystem. From the attentive nursing staff on the floor to the resident team and the stellar physical and occupational therapists, every single person who managed my care operated with high-level efficiency and deep compassion. They made a daunting experience feel structured and comforting. If you find yourself in need of spinal surgery and are fortunate enough to land under Dr. Sheppard’s care, consider yourself in the best hands possible. He is a master technician, a gifted communicator, and a truly exceptional human being.

My experience with Dr. Sheppard has been only wonderful. He put me at ease the first moment I met with him. He generates a feeling of care that exceeds what I would normally expect, which is to say that he makes me feel as I've known him forever... that i can tell him anything and trust his confidence. So I have a very warm place in my heart for Dr Sheppard, but also i know that he is a fastidious surgeon who is probably born a healer. He probably just had to go to school for the paperwork that told the government it was okay for him to cut on people! I fully trust Dr Sheppard.

Prior to surgery I had a lot of back pain, I wasn't able to walk around my neighborhood, go grocery shopping. A year later and I am able to do all of that plus more. The pain is completely gone. I thought recovering from surgery was going to be a lot harder but I was able to do things on my own and needed little to no help.

I am about a year out from surgery with Dr. Sheppard and I can say he has given me so much of my life back. I can complete simple tasks, such as eating on my own. Which was something I wasn't able to do before. I trust Dr. Sheppard's opinion and recommendations, I would recommend him to others in a heartbeat.

Oh Dr. Sheppard how I love, adore and respect you immensely! I went to see him to "sign off" on surgery so I could just have steroid injections, but little did I know that it would be a bit more critical. After doing some tests he told me I needed to have a cervical laminoplasty or I would be using a cane or wheelchair within a year. Within a month I had the surgery and it is nothing short of miraculous how much I have improved. Before I could barely move my neck from side to side and now I can make a circle moving my head! I'm also able to get back to exercising with a battle rope which before I couldn't lift my head while exercising with it. Dr. Sheppard is one of the best doctors on this planet!! Not only has he been gifted with great surgical skills but just as important for a patient is he has INCREDIBLE compassion, genuinely cares for you, takes the time to really meet your needs and concerns and will pray with you!! I'm crying as I write this because he really is the best of the best and his parents should be so proud that they raised such a fine human being that has and will continue to touch lives and really make a difference! Wow! One word I would use to describe Dr. Sheppard. I have never experienced such a compassionate, thoughtful, meticulous physician. He made me and my family feel at ease about having such a delicate surgery. He explained the pros/cons and encouraged us to get a second opinion as well. He checked on me several times and answered all concerns. Dr. Sheppard has a beautiful heart. He is a Godsend!

Dr. Sheppard is amazing! He is kind and compassionate. After I was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer, he took special time out of his day to come and see me. He explained my condition, showing me important points on the MRI, and clearly explained the goals of surgery and its risks. Dr. Sheppard is professional, knowledgeable, and talented. During the surgery to remove my tumor, he safeguarded my nerves, which enabled me to still have full control of my body! During my stay in the hospital and afterward, Dr. Sheppard regularly checked in on me, always with genuine concern and care. I can’t speak highly enough of him! God used Dr. Sheppard to help heal my body, and I am so very thankful!

Dr Sheppard & his office staff are incredible! All my questions were answered and he spent a lot of time discussing my procedure, expectations post-op, and timelines with me and my family.
